Mr. Timothy Martin was retained by HDR to provide pavement engineering services for the I-35 Southern Gateway Project. The Project consists of 11 miles of I-35 just south of I-30 to just past US 67 as well as US 67 from I-35 to I-20. I-35, as well as managed lanes, were to be rebuilt and general purpose lanes widened. US 67 was to be widened.
Scope of work included the development of rigid pavement designs consisting of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP). The pavements were designed using TSLAB86 as well as alternative technical concepts using the TXDOT ME-CRCP software that was currently under development. Pavement design strategies were provided for the managed lanes, general purpose lanes, frontage roads, ramps, cross streets, widened sections and temporary roadways. Temporary roadways were designed using TXDOT’s FPS-21 software. Traffic loadings were developed from the data provided and the schematics indicating the Average Daily Traffic (ADT) for each segment of roadway.
